Spooky Tales
A flashlight picture book with friendly monsters
Every page of Spooky Tales is a dark room. The child drags a light around it, finds three friendly monsters, taps toys that make sounds and picks up a hidden object that turns the page. Four pages make a tale, and the last page answers the tale's question: whose shadow was it?

About the game
This is a Halloween game for children who like a little shiver and a lot of giggling. Nothing chases the child and nothing jumps at the screen. A monster first shows as a pair of glowing eyes, then as a soft shadow that grows for a moment, and then it pops out and does something silly: the ghost has lost a sock, the vampire only eats carrots, the dragon sneezes.
No reading is needed. The whole book is played by moving a light and tapping what it shows. Parents can make the rooms lighter or darker with a night-light setting, and can switch the glowing eyes off.
What is inside

A dark room and a light
The child puts a finger on the screen and the flashlight follows it. Outside the circle of light the room stays dim; inside it the bed, the curtains and the toys show in colour. Pairs of glowing eyes blink in the dark and show where somebody is hiding, and a trail of marks on the floor, such as blue footprints or lost socks, leads from one hiding place to the next.
When the light rests on a hiding place, a shadow rises there. The top of the screen shows three round slots for the monsters of this page, two dots for the toys and one slot for the page's key object.

Shadows that turn out to be friends
After a short moment the shadow pops and the monster is there, with its own sound and its own small joke in movement. Whiskers the cat stretches, Bones the skeleton rattles in bunny slippers, Hocus the little witch gets the hiccups. A found monster stays on the page and answers every tap with its sound. Each find gives one candy.
One monster on each page hides behind a prop: a box, a barrel, a bush, a sheet, a trunk or a curtain. Two toys on each page, from a set of eight, play a sound when tapped: a cuckoo clock, a kettle, a piano, a bell, a duck, a music box, a drum and a frog.

Six tales, four pages each
The bookshelf holds six tales: Whose Shadow?, The Attic Noise, Fog Walk, Pumpkin Party, Library After Dark and The Sleepover. All six are open from the start. Each cover shows a shadow with a question mark until the tale is finished.
A page ends when the child finds its key object, for example a moon in the first tale or a star cookie in the second, and taps it. The key flies to its slot and the page turns. The child may turn the page without finding everyone; finding all three monsters on a page adds three candies. A tale can be left halfway and continued later from the same page.

The mystery at the end
The third monster on the last page is the one that left the trail through the whole tale. When the fourth key is found, the lights come on, the monster stands in the middle of the scene and its name appears in large letters. Then the reward screen counts the candies, hands over a star medal and shows any new monster cards.
A tale finished with all twelve monsters found earns a lollipop on its cover and ten extra candies, once per tale.

Monster cards and hats
Every monster has a card in the Monsters album. The card appears after the first find and gets a new frame and another star after 4 and after 10 finds. Tapping a card opens it large: the monster repeats its joke, a counter shows how many times it has been found, and a row of six hats lets the child dress it in a party hat, a crown, a top hat, a bow, a flower or a cap. The hat then shows wherever that monster appears.

Four flashlights
Candies are spent in one place only: the Flashlights shelf. The classic red flashlight is free. The star wand costs 20 candies, the moon light 40 and the pumpkin lantern 60. Each has its own colour of light, warm yellow, pale blue or orange, and the chosen one is used in every tale and in the Shadow Theatre. Candies cannot be bought; they come only from playing.

Daily gift and three mini games
Once a day the candy bucket on the bookshelf can be tapped for three candies and a random monster card. The Mini games button opens three small games. In Shadow Theatre the child drags five monsters around in front of a lamp and watches their shadows grow and shrink on the wall. In Who Is It? a shadow is shown and the child picks the right one of three faces, eight times in a row. In Spooky Band four monsters are drum pads over an eight-beat loop that the child fills in and saves.
How to play

- Hold the light on glowing eyes or at the end of a trail until the shadow pops into a monster.
- Tap the toys to hear them and tap found monsters to hear them again.
- Find the key object and tap it to turn the page.
- On the fourth page, find the key to see whose shadow it was and collect the candies.

For parents
Your child moves a light across twelve night-time places, a bedroom, an attic, a foggy forest and others, and uncovers cartoon monsters that turn out to be harmless and funny. The game keeps to fixed rules of tone: monsters bounce, wobble and stretch, nothing lunges at the child, nothing grows large on the screen and there are no red flashes. The shadow always rises a moment before the pop, so there is no sudden jump.
There is no timer, no score to lose and no wrong move. A page can be turned without finding everyone, and a moth comes to help after 12 quiet seconds. One tale is four pages, which makes a natural stopping point; the reward screen offers home, the next tale or the card album.
If the rooms feel too dark for your child, the night-light button on every page makes them lighter in three steps, and the glowing eyes can be switched off in settings. Settings open with a two-second hold on the cog, so a small child does not land there by accident. Captions with the written jokes are off by default.
The game works fully offline and requests no Android permissions. There are no ads, no purchases, no account, no chat and no links out, and nothing is collected. Progress and the photos taken with the in-game camera button, which are pictures of the game screen, stay in the game's storage on the device.
Questions and answers
Is it scary?
It is made to be gentle. Monsters appear as blinking eyes, then as a soft shadow, then as a smiling cartoon character that does something silly. Nothing rushes at the screen and there are no loud shocks. The night-light setting makes the rooms lighter if a child prefers that.
What age is it for?
It is designed for ages 4 to 8. A younger child can play with a parent, since the only actions are dragging a light and tapping.
Does my child need to read?
No. The game is played with the light and with taps. Tale titles and a few short menu labels are the only text a child meets, and optional captions with the jokes can be switched on for children who like to read along.
Does it work offline?
Yes, completely. The game makes no network calls and asks for no permissions. There are no ads and nothing to buy.
How long does a tale take?
A tale is four pages with three monsters each. There is no timer, so a child can go through it quickly or search every corner. A tale left in the middle continues from the same page next time.
Is progress saved?
Yes, on the device: candies, monster cards, medals, hats, flashlights and up to 12 photos. Removing the app, or the reset button in settings held for 3 seconds, clears them.
Which languages are available?
The few labels and the optional captions are available in 20 languages. The language is picked from the phone's setting on first start and can be changed in settings. Monster names stay the same in every language.
Download and install
Open the downloaded file on your Android device. If prompted, allow installation from the browser or file manager, install the game, then switch that permission off again.
The game itself is available in 20 languages and picks yours automatically.
