Crunchy Lab
Cut it, crack it, press it, pop it
Crunchy Lab is a quiet lab bench for small hands. The child takes a block of soap, ice, wafer, sand or jelly from a jar, picks a toy tool and cuts, hammers, presses, stamps and pokes it, and every piece that comes off really comes off. There is no timer and nothing can go wrong.

About the game
The game opens on a shelf of twelve jars. Each jar holds one material: pink soap, ice, a bubble sheet, a wafer, mint sand, chips, honeycomb, purple rock candy, a puffed bar with sprinkles, red jelly, orange play dough and yellow foam. A tap on a jar puts a square block of that material on the bench, with a tray of six tools below it.
What makes the game interesting is that the cut is real. The knife follows the finger and the block separates exactly along that line. Hard materials tip over, fall and shatter into shards. Soft ones slide apart and stay on the bench, so sand and dough keep the shape that was cut into them. Each material has its own sounds, and the scraping sound gets louder and higher as the finger moves faster.
A glow meter at the top fills with every action. When it is full the batch is finished: stars and coins are counted, and the first time on each material an egg hatches into that material's little creature, which moves into the album.
What is inside

One block, one finger, no rules
The child picks a tool from the tray and uses it on the block. A cut with the knife splits the block along the drawn line. Two taps with the mallet crack the ice into jagged pieces that drop off the bench. When the block is used up, a new one slides in, and the green plus button brings a fresh block at any time.
Quick actions one after another build a combo, shown as x2, x3 and so on next to the meter, and fill it faster. Slow play fills it too. There is no clock and no way to lose a batch.

Six tools and eight cookie cutters
Each tool does one clear thing, and the same tool behaves differently on hard and soft blocks. From the third block of a session a layer block can appear, made of two or three materials stacked in bands, so one cut passes through, say, soap and then sand.
- Knife: a freehand cut that follows the finger
- Wire cutter: a straight cut across the whole block, aimed first and then released
- Mallet: dents soft blocks and breaks hard ones after one to three hits
- Press: squashes foam, jelly and dough, and crushes wafer, chips and ice
- Cookie cutter: stamps out a star, heart, flower, moon, paw, fish, dino or bear
- Pin: pokes holes and pops the bubbles of the bubble sheet one by one

Twelve jars on the lab shelf
Four jars are open from the first minute: soap, ice, the bubble sheet and the wafer. The other eight open as the child collects stars, at 6, 12, 18, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 60 stars. A locked jar shows the number of stars it needs, so a child who cannot read still sees how far away it is.
The shelf is also the hub of the game. The three round buttons at the bottom open the daily gift, the mini games and the shop.

A creature for every material
Every material has its own creature. It hatches from an egg the first time the glow meter is filled on that material. The album shows all twelve places from the start, as dark silhouettes, and each one is replaced by the creature once it is found. A tap on a found creature shows it large and plays the crunch of its material.
The second tab of the album holds photos. The camera button in the lab saves a picture of the bench as it looks at that moment. The album keeps the twelve newest photos, and a photo can be deleted with two taps on the bin.

Four mini games and a sound mixer
The mini games reuse the lab tools for one small task each. None of them can be failed.
- Shape Orders: a pale outline shows on a block of sand, dough or jelly; the child picks the matching cookie cutter and stamps it out. 24 orders in a row
- Equal Slices: dotted lines mark where to cut a soap block into equal parts with the wire cutter, five rounds per game
- Pop Rush: a sheet of 88 bubbles to pop with a finger; a bubble with a gold star pops its neighbours too. Three sheets per game
- Smash Tower: a tower of ice or rock candy cubes to break with the mallet, and the shards collect in a jar. Three towers per game
- Crunch mixer: choose two of ten materials and tap the disc to hear both crunches together

Colours, toppings and benches
Soap, sand, dough and foam can be recoloured with eight tints: pink, mint, sky and lemon are free, lilac, coral, teal and rainbow cost 80 coins each. The gem button switches the tray to eight toppings that the child stamps onto the pieces: a pink gem, a blue gem, a gold star, a flower, a pearl, a heart, sprinkles and a leaf.
The shop also sells three more bench surfaces for 150, 300 and 500 coins. Coins come only from playing and from the daily gift. Nothing in the game is bought with real money.

For parents
Crunchy Lab is a touch toy more than a game with levels. The child drags a finger across a block and sees and hears it come apart. One batch, from a fresh block to a full glow meter, takes a minute or two, and it ends on a reward screen with three buttons, so there is a natural place to stop. Nothing is timed and nothing is lost by stopping halfway.
No reading is needed. The few words in the game are on the menus, and they appear in one of 20 languages picked from the device language; the globe button on the title screen changes it. Progress is paced by stars: each batch gives one to three, and the last jar needs 60.
For children who are sensitive to noise there is a Soft sounds switch on the title screen, next to separate switches for sound and music. Calm mode, the moon button in the lab, lets the lab cut by itself while the sound fades away, which some families use before bed.
The game works fully offline. It has no ads, no purchases, no account, no chat and no links out, it asks for no Android permissions and it collects nothing. Photos are pictures of the bench stored inside the game; the camera of the phone is never used.
Questions and answers
What age is Crunchy Lab for?
It is made for children of about 3 to 9. A three-year-old can cut and smash with one finger. Older children go for three stars, the combo and the mini games.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. The game has no network code at all and asks for no permissions. It can be played in flight mode.
Are there ads or purchases?
No. Tints and benches are bought with coins that are earned by playing and from the daily gift. Real money is not used anywhere.
Does my child need to read?
No. Tools, jars, moulds and rewards are pictures. A locked jar shows a star and a number.
How long is a session?
One batch takes one to two minutes and ends on a reward screen. A mini game takes about the same. There is no energy system and no waiting.
Is progress saved?
Yes, automatically, on the device. Stars, coins, creatures, tints, benches and photos are kept between sessions. If the game is uninstalled, the progress goes with it.
The sounds are a lot for my child. Can they be reduced?
Yes. The title screen has a Sound switch, a Music switch and a Soft sounds switch that makes every effect gentler and quieter.
Download and install
Open the downloaded file on your Android device. If prompted, allow installation from the browser or file manager, install the game, then switch that permission off again.
The game itself is available in 20 languages and picks yours automatically.
