Monster Salon
Wash, brush and dress a sleepy monster

A sleepy monster shuffles into a purple salon with mud in its coat and knots in its fur. The child washes it, brushes and trims it, sprays on colours and patterns, tidies horns, claws and fangs, picks its eyes and puts a hat on top. There are 12 monsters, each with two visits, and no way to get anything wrong.

About the game

Monster Salon is a grooming game where the customer is asleep for most of the appointment. The monster stands in front of a round window with the moon in it, snoring gently, while the child works through six trays of tools at the bottom of the screen: Wash, Coat, Horns, Claws, Face and Style. Everything is done by rubbing or tapping with one finger.

The coat is the main attraction. On furry monsters about 1,200 separate strands bend under the brush, fall away under the scissors and change colour under the spray. Slimy monsters are made of blobs and drips, and scaly ones of small tiles, and each kind is groomed in its own way. Three small pictures in the corner show what this customer would like, and granting them earns up to three stars.

What is inside

First, a wash

Every customer arrives with gunk stuck in its coat: mud, burrs, cobwebs, goo and soot. The Wash tray has a sponge that works up foam, a shower head that rinses it off and a little blower that dries the coat. The monster sleeps through all of it, and a row of five icons at the top of the screen ticks off each station as it is finished: wash, coat, horns and claws, face, style.

Round buttons on the right move the view between the whole body, the face, the hands and the feet, so small fingers can reach small claws. A pink star button on the left gives the monster a surprise makeover: the gunk disappears and the coat comes out tidy in a random two-colour pattern.

Brush, untangle, trim and shave

On a furry monster the Coat tray holds seven tools. The brush smooths messy strands. The comb picks apart knots, each one popping with a higher note than the last. The scissors snip strands shorter wherever the finger passes. The shaver stamps a bare shape into the fur: a heart, a star, a lightning bolt, a paw, a moon or a spiral. If the cut goes too far, the growing potion brings the fur back, and the blower fluffs it up.

Slimy monsters get a squeegee and a buffer to smooth their lumps, and scaly ones a sponge and a buffer to make the tiles shine.

The same monster sprayed in purple and yellow tiger stripes, with the colour row and the stencil row in the Coat tray

Colours and stencils

The spray can recolours the coat where it is pointed. Under the tools is a row of twelve colours plus a rainbow and a glitter spray, and under that a row of stencils: plain, tiger stripes, dots, zigzag, hearts, camouflage, stars, checks and rainbow bands. With a stencil chosen, the spray lays down a two-colour pattern, so one pass can turn a blue monster into a purple and yellow tiger.

Colour works on all three kinds of coat, and it is the wish that every customer has.

Horns and claws

The view moves up to the horns. A file takes off the chips, a buffer brings up the shine and a little brush paints them in any of the twelve colours, gold or rainbow. The same tray swaps the horn shape and studs the horns with gems in five colours. Two horn shapes are free and three more come from the shop.

Claws go through the same three steps, one claw at a time: file, buff, paint. There are six claw designs: plain, tipped, striped, dotted, starred and glitter.

Fangs, eyes and waking up

In the Face tray the monster opens its mouth wide. The sponge wipes the fangs clean, the buffer polishes them and the brush can paint them gold. Three fang styles are on offer: pointy, round and long.

Then come the eyes. Until now the monster has been asleep; the moment the child picks a pair, it yawns and wakes up. Googly and heart eyes are free, and star, sleepy, slit and spiral eyes cost 100 coins each.

Style, wishes and stars

The Style tray holds twelve accessories in four groups: hats, glasses, bows and things for the neck. A witch hat, round glasses, a pink bow and a scarf are free from the start, and the rest are bought with coins.

The three pictures at the top left are the customer's wishes, for example a colour, short or long fur, and glasses. Each one gets a tick as soon as it is met. Pressing the green button ends the visit: all wishes met gives three stars, two gives two, and anything else gives one. Coins are paid for wishes, for each station finished and for each different tool used.

Photo booth, album, shop and mini games

After the stars comes the photo booth. The child chooses one of six backdrops (moon, pumpkin, swamp, disco, attic, aurora), a frame colour and stickers (pumpkin, bat, ghost, moon, candy), then saves the picture to the album. The album keeps up to 40 photos and has a page for each monster with its stars for both visits and six badges.

The shop sells accessories, eyes and horns for coins. Four mini games pay a few coins each: polishing pumpkins against a 30 second clock, popping bubbles for 30 seconds, finding six pairs of monsters among 12 cards, and an endless bubble bath with nothing to win.

How to play

  1. Press Play and choose a monster. Four are open from the start.
  2. Look at the wish pictures at the top left.
  3. Wash: soap with the sponge, rinse with the shower, dry with the blower.
  4. Open Coat: brush, untangle and trim, then spray a colour and a stencil.
  5. File, buff and paint the horns and claws.
  6. In Face clean the fangs and pick the eyes to wake the monster, then add accessories in Style.
  7. Press the green tick for stars and coins, then take a photo.

For parents

The child rubs and taps, and a monster changes in front of them. No step is forced: the trays can be opened in any order and a visit can be finished at any time with the green button, so a three-year-old can spray everything pink and still get a star, while an older child will read the wish pictures and work towards three. A full visit takes roughly five minutes. There is no timer in the salon and nothing to lose; only two of the mini games run on a 30 second clock.

The monsters are round, sleepy and friendly, and the salon is cosy rather than scary: pumpkins, a bat, lanterns and a moon in the window. New monsters open as stars add up, and coins buy more hats, eyes and horns.

The game works fully offline. It has no ads, no purchases, no account, no chat and no links out, it asks for no Android permissions and collects nothing. Coins are earned by playing only. Photos in the album are pictures of the game screen, not camera photos, and they stay on the device. There are 20 interface languages, chosen automatically with a switcher behind the globe, a sound button on the main screens, and all sound is synthesised.

Questions and answers

What age is Monster Salon for?

Ages 3 to 9. The youngest enjoy washing and spraying; older children follow the wish pictures and collect badges for every monster.

Is it scary?

No. The monsters are soft, sleepy characters, and the setting is a purple salon with pumpkins and lanterns. Nothing jumps out and nothing hurts the monster.

Does my child need to read?

No. Wishes, tools, prices and results are all pictures and numbers. The only words are tray names and menu labels.

Does it work offline, and are there ads?

It works with no connection and makes no network calls. There are no ads and nothing is sold for real money; coins come from playing.

How long is one visit?

About five minutes if every station is done, less if the child presses the green button early. A visit can be ended at any time and always gives at least one star.

Is progress saved?

Yes, on the device only: stars, coins, bought items, badges and album photos. Uninstalling the app erases them.

Does the photo booth use the camera?

No. It saves a picture of the styled monster with a backdrop, frame and stickers. The app has no camera or gallery access.
